Tape Backup

ITS operates a large tape backup system using IBM Storage Protect (formerly Tivoli). The tape robot is located in Hönggerberg.

Use for Research Groups

The service is available to research groups for small servers with a reasonable amount of storage. For virtual servers hosted by ITS the right for a backup is always included.

Please contact our service desk if you need backup on one of your servers.

Tape backup is not intended for desktop computers or laptops.

Servers Managed by isginf

Servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux managed by isginf have the relevant directories automatically backed up.

Backup Time

Backup is done once per day. The exact time of the backup is controlled by ITS. The preferred backup time for our systems is 01:00 to 05:00 in the morning.

Retention Policy

The default policy is to keep up to 90 copies of a file for a maximum time of 90 days. This equals one copy per day for a file that changes every day.
