Wireless Network

Wireless network (WIFI or WLAN) is available in all ETH buildings and provided directly from ITS. Authentication is always required for access.

The login to use is different depending on your relation to ETH and where you want to connect to:

  • <your ETH user name>@staff-net.ethz.ch if you are a staff member such as professors, assistants, post-docs and technical staff)
  • <your ETH user name>@student-net.ethz.ch if you are a student
  • <your ETH user name>@guest-net.ethz.ch if you are a guest

SSIDs

The following SSIDs are available:

SSID Band EncryptionSorted ascending Authentication
eth-guest 2.4GHz - Landing page or VPN, login as described above and network password
eth-guest-5 5GHz - Landing page or VPN, login as described above and network password
eth 2.4GHz EAP Direct, login as described above and network password
eth-5 5GHz EAP Direct, login as described above and network password
eduroam 2.4GHz EAP Direct, login as described above and network password
eduroam-5 5GHz EAP Direct, login as described above and network password
IoT 2.4GHz and 5GHz WPA2 Shared key, obtained from isginf

DHCP is used for all wireless networks to configure the IP settings.

5GHz or 2.4GHz

For devices that support the 5GHz bands the …-5 SSIDs are the preferred choice because of the higher throughput and reliability.

eduroam-5 and eduroam

The eduroam-5 and eduroam SSIDs are the recommended SSIDs. eduroam allows you to get WIFI access at a variety of places, for instance the University of Zurich.

Please note that eduroam-5 is faster but only works at ETH. If you are regularly visiting other places participating in eduroam then please use eduroam.

eth-5 and eth

The eth-5 and eth SSIDs can alternatively be used if devices have problems with eduroam-5 and eduroam, e.g. in offices in range of USZ buildings who also have these SSIDs.

public-5 and public

The public-5 and public SSIDs are for guests who want to connect to the Internet. Access to the ETH network is restricted.

Students and and staff of ETH can also connect to these SSIDs and instead of logging in use VPN to get full network access.

We do not recommend the use of eth-guest-5 or eth-guest without VPN because the communication is not encrypted.

Configuration

ITS has a comprehensive set of guides for configuring WIFI on the popular operating systems.

Hotspots in Switzerland

The public WIFI (PWLAN) hot spots of the following internet providers can be used to gain access to the internet.

To use the service connect to the respective SSID and start the ETH VPN.
